Saturday, May 31, 2014

Stop by next Saturday June 7 between 12-3 to meet local author Melody Overton and pick up a signed copy of her new book (for grown-ups) "Tales of the Siren: A Starbucks Melody."

Vignettes from Melody's blog and beyond illustrate her life in the community with the people at the heart of a behemoth that many consider a soulless corporation. Whether it's cleaning up Gas Works Park, feeding the homeless, or checking out a grand opening, Melody's anecdotes sparkle with a love for coffee & community --and give soul to the ubiquitous coffee giant.

Books We Love and New Arrivals

Journey by Aaron Becker
* Caldecott Honor Book, 2014 *

A lonely girl draws a magic door on her bedroom wall and through it escapes into a world where wonder, adventure, and danger abound. Red marker in hand, she creates a boat, a balloon, and a flying carpet that carry her on a spectacular journey toward an uncertain destiny. When she is captured by a sinister emperor, only an act of tremendous courage and kindness can set her free. Can it also lead her home and to her heart's desire?

Sky Color by Peter Reynolds

Marisol is ready to paint the sky for the class mural, but she can't find the color she thinks she needs. A spectacular sunset on the bus ride home starts Marisol thinking. A many-hued dream later that night nurtures the idea that maybe, just maybe, there is another way. In this lovely book, the third in his Creatrilogy, which also includes The Dot and Ish, Peter H. Reynolds once again demystifies and celebrates the creative process, and expands the notion of what it means to be an artist.

When Mermaids Sleep by Ann Bonwill

Take a bedtime journey to a land where mermaids sleep and pirates snore, where fairies slumber on flower petals and a giant's sleepy sighs make the valleys rumble. With Ann Bonwill's soft and soothing rhyme, and dreamy illustrations by acclaimed artists Steve Johnson and Lou Fancher, When Mermaids Sleep will effortlessly pull tired dreamers to a magical land of slumber.

Hollow City: the Second Novel of
Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs

The extraordinary journey that began in Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children continues as Jacob Portman and his newfound friends journey to London, the peculiar capital of the world. There, they hope to find a cure for their beloved headmistress, Miss Peregrine. But in this war-torn city, hideous surprises lurk around every corner. And before Jacob can deliver the peculiar children to safety, he must make an important decision about his love for Emma Bloom. Hollow City draws readers into a richly imagined world of telepathy and time loops, of sideshows and shapeshifters -- a world populated with adult "peculiars," murderous wights, and a bizarre menagerie of uncanny animals.

Books We Love - New Arrivals!

Flora & Ulysses by Kate DiCamillo
*** Winner of the 2014 Newbery Medal ***
Once again winning the Newbery Award, the latest from Kate DiCamillo is about a girl, a squirrel, romance, vaccuums, and the power of story. Illustrated by K. G. Campbell.

Wildwood Imperium by Colin Meloy & Carson Ellis

The third book in the Wildwood series, from this Portland-based husband & wife writer-illustrator team. (Mr. Meloy is also in the band The Decembrists and Ms. Ellis' wonderful illustrations have graced that band's albums as well as children's books including "Mysterious Benedict Society.") In the latest installment, a young girl's midnight seance awakens a long-slumbering malevolent spirit...A band of runaway orphans allies with an underground collective of saboteurs and plans a daring rescue of their friends, imprisoned in the belly of an industrial wasteland...Two old friends draw closer to their goal of bringing together a pair of exiled toy makers to reanimate a mechanical boy prince...As the fate of Wildwood hangs in the balance.

Survivors #4: The Broken Path by Erin Hunter

The fourth book in the Survivors series, from the author of the Warriors and Seekers series. Lucky and Alpha have finally reached an uneasy peace, but tensions are still high -- and Alpha has made it clear that there are some dogs he will never fully accept. As the newly united Pack sets off in search of a home far away from the Fierce Dog camp, they discover that no territory is truly safe. When they encounter another group of dogs who survived the Big Growl, Lucky hopes that they can work together as allies - but this new Pack may be their most dangerous enemy yet.

Zoom! Zoom! Sounds of Things That Go in the City

Written by Robert Burleigh; illustrated by Tad Carpenter. Retro-style illustrations enliven the simple rhyming text through a boy's day, from morning's joggers until night's last train.

Octopus's Garden by Ringo Starr

Illustrated by Ben Cort. Includes a CD with a new recording of the song and a read-along by Ringo Starr. Who wouldn't like to visit an octopus's garden? Perfect for sharing and reading (and singing) again and again, this book is sure to become as much a classic as the song.

Extra Yarn by Mac Barnett * Caldecott Honor 2013

Illustrated by Jon Klassen, who has won multiple Caldecott awards for his marvelous illustrations. With a supply of yarn that never runs out, Annabelle knits for everyone and everything in town until an evil archduke decides he wants the yarn for himself. A wry, triumphant fairy tale with a happy ending; a story about generosity where perserverance and good will triumph over cynicism and evil.

Dream Animals by Emily Winfield Martin

A Bedtime Journey. Furred, finned, or feathered, your dream animal is waiting. Snuggle up, open this book. And get ready to go to your dreams. Close your eyes, and snuggle in.
